<p>In the celebration of architecture, the monumentality of the whole is often highlighted over the subtlety of a building&#8217;s material composition. The <em>Material Table</em> exhibition at <a href="http://www.thearamgallery.org/" target="_blank">The Aram Gallery</a> lays bare an alchemy of materials across a range of <a href="http://www.adjaye.com/" target="_blank">Adjaye Associates</a>&#8216; projects.<span id="more-3010"></span></p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">MATERIAL TABLE</span><span style="font-weight: normal;">, 13th May &#8211; 9th July 2011</span></strong></p>
<p><strong>THE ARAM GALLERY</strong></p>
<p>110 Drury Lane, London <a href="http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=WC2B+5SG&amp;sll=51.513389,-0.118875&amp;sspn=0.006744,0.01929&amp;gl=uk&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=London+WC2B+5SG,+United+Kingdom&amp;z=16" target="_blank">WC2B 5SG</a> (020 7557 7526)</p>
<p>Adjaye&#8217;s extensive library of materials are transported as one directly from his office and are divided and ordered according to their types, quality and property; texture, porous, hard and so on. Correlating to a periodic table, the exhibition presents the concept and approach of Adjaye Associates as they relate materials to projects and the natural environment they are surrounded by.</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Material Table</em> is an attempt to let audiences experience at first hand one of the critical moments in the process and, in particular, to enjoy the open richness and respect in which Adjaye Associates uses materials in its architecture,&#8221; says <a href="http://danielcharny.com/" target="_blank">Daniel Charny</a>, guest curator of <em>Material Table</em>.</p>

<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Prototypes and Experiments V: Architectural Elements</span></strong></p>
<p>1st July-28th August 2010</p>
<p><strong>THE ARAM GALLERY</strong></p>
<p>110 Drury Lane, London <a href="http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=safari&amp;q=WC2B+5SG&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=London+WC2B+5SG,+United+Kingdom&amp;gl=uk&amp;ei=h1osTMaSPIH20wSzruS6DQ&amp;ved=0CBcQ8gEwAA&amp;z=16" target="_blank">WC2B 5SG</a> (020 7557 7526)</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1362" title="Superfusionlab_Bexhill on Sea shelter" src="http://www.londondesignguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Superfusionlab_Bexhill-on-Sea-shelter.bmp" alt="Superfusionlab_Bexhill on Sea shelter" /></p>
<p>Prototypes and experiments are critical elements in the development process of any new design. If prototypes are the manifestation of the design idea on its way to production, experiments are more like steps on the way. With architecture, elements of a complex project often offer a critical insight into the DNA of that project.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1363" title="ecoLogicStudio_LightWall" src="http://www.londondesignguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/ecoLogicStudio_LightWall.jpg" alt="ecoLogicStudio_LightWall" width="520" height="335" /></p>
<p>The prototype, being part of a process, makes more real an idea that will lead to a final piece, and is not usually made with the intention of being shown outside the architect’s practice. Experiments are even less refined and sometimes constitute a partial sketch on the way to the prototype. These objects, however, hold a rare charm, and give an insight into the architect’s imagination.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1364" title="Ron Arad_OVM_Cast Roof trial" src="http://www.londondesignguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Ron-Arad_OVM_Cast-Roof-trial.jpg" alt="Ron Arad_OVM_Cast Roof trial" width="380" height="507" /></p>
<p>The Aram Gallery is interested in the way designers think and work. Prototypes and Experiments V includes 1:1 elements and samples sourced from the studios of established practices alongside selected drawings and models taken from the architects’ physical or digital sketchbooks.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.thearamgallery.org/" target="_blank">The Aram Gallery</a> is presenting the fourth in its ongoing series called Prototypes and Experiments with a new batch of exhibits sourced from the studios of emerging and established designers. <p> </p>
<p><strong>PROTOTYPES AND EXPERIMENTS IV: Metal and Form</strong></p>
<p>21st January &#8211; 6th March 2010</p>
<p><strong>THE ARAM GALLERY</strong></p>
<p>Top Floor, 110 Drury Lane, London <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&amp;q=WC2B+5SG&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=London+WC2B+5SG,+United+Kingdom&amp;ei=lIhZS-u8DpH80wTX3cX3BA&amp;ved=0CAoQ8gEwAA&amp;z=16" target="_blank">WC2B 5SG</a> (07827 353 026)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>This exhibition series provides a rare glimpse into the development process of a new design. Most people are totally unaware of the stages through which a design will mature, from crude sketches to mini models and then full scale prototypes, which in themselves can hold a rare charm. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-647" title="Vandasye_Coatrack" src="http://www.londondesignguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Vandasye_Coatrack.jpg" alt="Vandasye_Coatrack" width="380" height="570" /></p>
<p>In most cases, a prototype is not made with the intention of being sold or shown outside the designer&#8217;s studio. This exhibition exposes the various steps of the process and celebrates the designer&#8217;s imagination &#8211; these are designs in their raw state prior to any interference from manufacturing realities or marketing forces.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-648" title="Gitta Gschwendtner_Bag Stools" src="http://www.londondesignguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Gitta-Gschwendtner_Bag-Stools.jpg" alt="Gitta Gschwendtner_Bag Stools" width="380" height="570" /></p>
<p>The objects might be characterised by a technical or material discrepancy, compared to the final product, due to a lack of access of the designer to technology at the process stage. This exhibition reinforces The Aram Gallery&#8217;s commitment to the way designers think and work in their search for insight into the design process.</p>

<p>Product designer, writer, and lecturer on design (and LDG contributor), <a href="http://www.timparsons.info/" target="_blank">Tim Parsons</a>, has written his first book &#8211; <em>Thinking:Objects / Contemporary Approaches to Product Design</em> &#8211; which launches in conjunction with an exhibition at <a href="http://www.thearamgallery.org/" target="_blank">The Aram Gallery</a>.<span id="more-513"></span></p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>THINKING:OBJECTS, </strong>open 11th December 2009 &#8211; 9th January 2010</p>
<p><strong>THE ARAM GALLERY</strong></p>
<p>Top floor, 110 Drury Lane, London <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&amp;q=WC2B+5SG&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=London+WC2B+5SG,+United+Kingdom&amp;ei=1wYhS9imPMqu4QbCk_3zCQ&amp;ved=0CAoQ8gEwAA&amp;z=16" target="_blank">WC2B 5SG</a> (07827 353 026)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The book examines the many approaches that designers take to their work and discusses their motivations. It highlights the ways in which products communicate value and meaning through form, giving designers tools with which to create their own designs.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-515" title="T.O. pages 36-37" src="http://www.londondesignguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/AVA-T.O.36-37.png" alt="T.O. pages 36-37" width="520" height="367" /></p>
<p>As a product designer himself, Parsons also explores the design process itself, the thought processes in the mind, and the importance of how drawing and model making aid decision-making.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-516" title="T.O. pages 80-81" src="http://www.londondesignguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/AVA-T.O.80-81.png" alt="T.O. pages 80-81" width="520" height="367" /></p>
<p>The accompanying exhibition illustrates a selection of the ideas explored in the book. It includes products designed by the likes of <a href="http://www.konstantin-grcic.com/" target="_blank">Konstantin Grcic</a>, <a href="http://www.achillecastiglioni.it/" target="_blank">Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naoto_Fukasawa" target="_blank">Naoto Fukasawa</a>, and <a href="http://www.pentagram.com/en/partners/daniel-weil.php" target="_blank">Daniel Weil</a> among others.</p>
