In this new exhibition, The Aram Gallery is exploring the use of 3D printing in the design industry today, showcasing works by designers and organisations who are developing the capabilities of rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing technologies.

The exhibition highlights the increasingly important role 3D printing plays in the design process, particularly during the complex prototyping stages.

Featuring pieces from the studios of both established and emerging designers, The Aram Gallery uses this exhibition as a way to examine how designers’ processes are developing to accommodate new technological advances.

The aim is the offer visitors a better understanding of what 3D printing is, and demonstrate how it is being contemporaneously used.

Participating designers include Assa Ashuach, Michael Eden, FAT, Freedom of Creation, Jump Studios, Markus Kayser, Dirk van der Kooij, Chau Har Lee, PearsonLloyd, Chloe McCormick, Serie, Superfusionlab, Silvia Weidenbach and Unfold.

‘Casts & Moulds’ is the sixth instalment in the on-going exhibition series, Prototypes and Experiments, presented by The Aram Gallery. This exhibition focuses on casting and moulding techniques as a means of manufacture, showing prototypes of design details as well as whole cast projects.

In the celebration of architecture, the monumentality of the whole is often highlighted over the subtlety of a building’s material composition. The Material Table exhibition at The Aram Gallery lays bare an alchemy of materials across a range of Adjaye Associates‘ projects.

Adjaye’s extensive library of materials are transported as one directly from his office and are divided and ordered according to their types, quality and property; texture, porous, hard and so on. Correlating to a periodic table, the exhibition presents the concept and approach of Adjaye Associates as they relate materials to projects and the natural environment they are surrounded by.

“Material Table is an attempt to let audiences experience at first hand one of the critical moments in the process and, in particular, to enjoy the open richness and respect in which Adjaye Associates uses materials in its architecture,” says Daniel Charny, guest curator of Material Table.

THE THEN-NOW SHOW is an exhibition of 15 designers who were originally amongst the graduates selected by Zeev Aram to take part in Aram Design’s Annual Graduate Shows in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The exhibition revisits the work of these designers, representing their designs at graduation, THEN, alongside recent work, NOW.

The main objective of this exhibition is to show to the public, undergraduate designers and those in their early careers the progress that these 15 designers have made over the last two decades.

The Aram Gallery is showcasing an exhibition titled 6 Hands, bringing together a series of projects by India Carpenter, Peter Marigold and Ella Robinson all of which are indicative of their current working style and which favour hand over machine.

Mind-Sets is the first solo exhibition of Dutch designer Ineke Hans to be presented in the UK. Staged by The Aram Gallery, the introspective exhibition explores the designer’s working process, thoughts, fascinations, and motives in design.

Curated by Daniel Charny, the exhibition gives an insight into Hans’ interest in materials and techniques, folklore, colour and decoration by mixing of her own designs with objects from her personal collection and references to historical pieces that have influenced her work.

Her latest work for OFFECCT is on show alongside works from recent years for the likes of Arco, Cappellini, Lensvelt and RoyalVKB. The exhibition also offers also a glimpse of Hans’ new designs for Ahrend and van Esch, which will be officially launched in autumn 2010.

An accompanying book, Mind-Sets by Walter Bettens (editor of DAMn Magazine), is available from the gallery.

This exhibition is the latest instalment in The Aram Gallery’s ongoing series exploring experimental aspects of design. The show focuses on architectural parts and allows trials and experiments of details, rather than models of whole projects, to take centre stage. A refreshing antidote to polished final pieces.

Prototypes and Experiments V: Architectural Elements

Prototypes and experiments are critical elements in the development process of any new design. If prototypes are the manifestation of the design idea on its way to production, experiments are more like steps on the way. With architecture, elements of a complex project often offer a critical insight into the DNA of that project.

The prototype, being part of a process, makes more real an idea that will lead to a final piece, and is not usually made with the intention of being shown outside the architect’s practice. Experiments are even less refined and sometimes constitute a partial sketch on the way to the prototype. These objects, however, hold a rare charm, and give an insight into the architect’s imagination.

The Aram Gallery is interested in the way designers think and work. Prototypes and Experiments V includes 1:1 elements and samples sourced from the studios of established practices alongside selected drawings and models taken from the architects’ physical or digital sketchbooks.

The Aram Gallery is presenting the fourth in its ongoing series called Prototypes and Experiments with a new batch of exhibits sourced from the studios of emerging and established designers. The exhibition displays objects exploring ideas in metal.

This exhibition series provides a rare glimpse into the development process of a new design. Most people are totally unaware of the stages through which a design will mature, from crude sketches to mini models and then full scale prototypes, which in themselves can hold a rare charm. 

In most cases, a prototype is not made with the intention of being sold or shown outside the designer’s studio. This exhibition exposes the various steps of the process and celebrates the designer’s imagination – these are designs in their raw state prior to any interference from manufacturing realities or marketing forces.

The objects might be characterised by a technical or material discrepancy, compared to the final product, due to a lack of access of the designer to technology at the process stage. This exhibition reinforces The Aram Gallery’s commitment to the way designers think and work in their search for insight into the design process.

The book examines the many approaches that designers take to their work and discusses their motivations. It highlights the ways in which products communicate value and meaning through form, giving designers tools with which to create their own designs.

As a product designer himself, Parsons also explores the design process itself, the thought processes in the mind, and the importance of how drawing and model making aid decision-making.

The accompanying exhibition illustrates a selection of the ideas explored in the book. It includes products designed by the likes of Konstantin Grcic, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Naoto Fukasawa, and Daniel Weil among others.
