The Barbican Art Gallery is presenting ‘Watch Me Move: The Animation Show‘, an extensive exhibition of animated imagery produced over the last 150 years, bringing together industry pioneers, independent film-makers and contemporary artists.

The show features over 170 works, from iconic animated clips to lesser-known film masterpieces. Big names include Étienne-Jules Marey, Harry Smith, Jan Švankmajer, William Kentridge and Nathalie Djurberg alongside the creative output of commercial studios such as Walt Disney, Aardman, Studio Ghibli and Pixar.

Taking the viewer behind the dream-world of the finished film, the exhibition consists of puppets, stage sets, storyboard drawings, wire-frame visualisations, cel and background images.

For the Surrealists, the house was more than ‘a machine for living’, instead it was a ‘stage for living’. The Surreal House exhibition at Barbican Art Gallery presents over 150 exhibits which demonstrate the significance of the unconscious world of dreams and desires.

The Surreal House explores the power and mystery of the house in our collective imagination. It is the first exhibition to throw light on the significance of surrealism for architecture. The exhibition also reveals the profound influence surrealism has had on a host of contemporary artists, filmmakers and architects.

Combining works of the imagination with important examples of actual ‘surreal’ houses, the exhibition presents a diverse range of paintings, photographs, films, models and installation from public and private collections in Britain, Europe, Canada and the United States, many rarely seen in the UK.

RON ARAD: RESTLESS, 18th February – 16th May 2010

Bringing together over 120 works spanning three decades, the show traces the development of Arad’s designs from his early post-punk approach, assembling works from readymade parts to his technologically-advanced sculptural objects made of highly polished metals.

Featuring a dramatic installation design by Ron Arad Associates using the latest LED display technology, the exhibition also includes architectural designs and instantly recognisable mass-produced objects.

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, Barbican is running a vibrant programme of talks, workshops, and lively late-night events examining the rising profile of London’s contemporary design community and Arad’s role in it during the past four decades.
