EXHIBITION: ‘THE SURREAL HOUSE’ AT BARBICAN ART GALLERY (BARBICAN), 10TH JUNE-12TH SEPTEMBER 2010

The Surreal House. Louise Bourgeois, Femme Maison, 1994

For the Surrealists, the house was more than ‘a machine for living’, instead it was a ‘stage for living’. The Surreal House exhibition at Barbican Art Gallery presents over 150 exhibits which demonstrate the significance of the unconscious world of dreams and desires.

BARBICAN ART GALLERY

Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS (0845 120 7550)

The Surreal House. Salvador Dalí, Sleep, c. 1937

The Surreal House explores the power and mystery of the house in our collective imagination. It is the first exhibition to throw light on the significance of surrealism for architecture. The exhibition also reveals the profound influence surrealism has had on a host of contemporary artists, filmmakers and architects.

The Surreal House. Rene Magritte. The Lovers 1928

Combining works of the imagination with important examples of actual ‘surreal’ houses, the exhibition presents a diverse range of paintings, photographs, films, models and installation from public and private collections in Britain, Europe, Canada and the United States, many rarely seen in the UK.

The exhibition is accompanied by a full programme of events and talks. See the Barbican website for more details.
